What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal ,
Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways of slowing unwanted hair growth and is becoming more popular. It’s a safe and comfortable procedure with no downtime, allowing you to return to your busy schedule.

You’ll need a series of treatments to initially slow down hair growth and then maintenance treatments to ensure long-lasting results. But what can you expect from these office visits?

Before the Procedure

You will receive instructions to follow before you arrive for your treatment. Because you’ll need several treatments to complete the laser hair removal, be sure to follow these each time. Your instructions may be particular to the area being treated and your skin tone or type, but could include any of the following guidelines:

  • Avoid the sun or skin-darkening creams. Instead, you may be given a bleaching product to lighten the skin.
  • Shaving or closely trimming the treatment area is recommended, but you should avoid other hair removal methods that directly affect the hair follicle. These include waxing and plucking.
  • Stop taking certain medications, including blood-thinning drugs. Do not stop taking prescribed medicines without direction from your provider.

During the Laser Treatment

Depending on the treated area, it may be shaved or trimmed closely. A topical anesthetic may also be applied. You’ll need to wear goggles to protect your eyes from the laser.

The laser beam is designed to reach the hair follicle deep beneath your skin. Targeted damage to the follicle slows hair growth. A cold gel and cooling tip on the laser help reduce the stinging sensation common with this treatment. Because each hair follicle needs to be targeted with the laser individually, the treatment time will vary based on the size of the area being treated.

Aftercare for Laser Hair Removal

Redness is expected after laser hair removal and can be treated with ice. If you feel discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers may be helpful. For mild skin reactions, your doctor may apply or prescribe a steroid cream. Sunscreen is recommended to protect the skin from damaging UV rays, especially while it’s more vulnerable after the treatment.
