When you frown or squint, the muscles in your forehead move your eyebrows together and scrunch the skin on your brow. The lines that appear on the forehead disappear when the muscles relax when you are younger, but that can change. Over decades of making facial expressions, many people notice furrows appearing between and above their brows, referred to as frown or worry lines. These lines can make you look grumpy and older, but furrowed brow treatment can correct these wanted lines.
What Causes Frown or Worry Lines?
The glabellar muscles move the eyebrows and create the “11s” or frown lines that appear between the eyebrows, and also impact the forehead, creating horizontal or worry lines. As you get older, the skin loses elasticity, and these furrows become more pronounced. Even when you feel happy or content, your facial expression can appear unhappy due to worry and frown lines.
Botox: The Best Furrowed Brow Treatment
Botox was the first injectable to be FDA-approved for cosmetic furrowed brow treatment. It is a neuromodulator that was used for eye spasm treatment in the 1990s, but a curious side effect was noticed. Patients receiving the injections near their eyes noticed that the furrows between their brows disappeared for a few months after each treatment. Botox quickly became used off-label for wrinkle treatment until it was approved by the FDA for frown line treatment in 2002.
Botox is effective for the treatment of dynamic lines, which are wrinkles caused by muscle movement. Frown and worry lines are caused by glabellar muscle movement, which Botox can control. The neurotoxin in Botox blocks the nerve receptors for the targeted muscle, causing controlled paralysis. This relaxes the muscle that causes brow furrows or other dynamic lines like crow’s feet around the eyes.
Botox injections for furrowed brow treatment are quick and virtually painless. The injections only take 10-15 minutes to complete and there is no downtime needed after the treatment. Unlike many fillers, Botox’s effects are not immediate. It takes a few days for the neurotoxin to relax the muscles between the eyebrows. Most people notice the lines on their forehead become softer and less defined within a few days and may be completely gone in about a week.
Botox treatments for furrowed brows last about four months before the neurotoxin protein is broken down into amino acids and absorbed into the body. To maintain a happier, youthful facial appearance, Botox injections can be completed 2-3 times per year.
