How Do Dental Implants Help with Replacing Missing Teeth? ,

Let’s talk about teeth. There’s a lot of negative stigma surrounding dental work, and a general fear of the dentist and oral surgery, but the truth is that it could improve so much of your life. From how you chew and digest, to the way your teeth shine and appear, dental applications and surgery has a lot to offer, especially if you’re missing teeth. If you’ve had an injury or illness that has caused missing teeth, ongoing pain or discomfort, you may be a great candidate for procedures from an oral surgeon. If you’re not into the idea of dentures, or dental bridges, dental implants may be a great option. Dental implants are artificial replacement teeth that are held in place with titanium anchors in the jaw. This technology can not only correct the appearance of your mouth and smile but can help the jawbone, restore the ability of chewing, and help preserve the surrounding teeth and gums.

You’re Not Alone: 70% of Adults Have Missing Teeth

Tooth loss is nothing to be ashamed about. In fact, nearly 70% of adults, from ages 35 to 44 have missing teeth. Furthermore, a quarter of Americans lose all their adult teeth by the age of 74. Before malalignment or issues with chewing or speaking begin to occur, it’s important to get the proper care for your mouth. Getting dental implants is a safe and long term solution to missing teeth.

Considering dental implants begins with assessing whether or not you may be a good candidate for them. Since the recovery time can be lengthy, sometimes up to several months, an excellent candidate is relatively healthy, does not smoke, and has enough bone in the jaw to accept the implants.

Dental Implant Procedure

The procedure of dental implants first involves drilling a screw-like device called an anchor into the jaw where the tooth is missing. This device keeps the implant in the proper place in the mouth, without movement. With an abutment, the tool that connects the implant to the crown (artificial tooth), is then placed in the mouth. A crown is specifically designed to fit the shape, color, and texture of the patient’s other teeth. The artificial teeth that are implanted function the same as natural teeth and are meant to be permanent. Studies have shown a 95% success rate with patients who have had dental implants for ten years.

Depending on your needs, there are different types of dental implants. For patients with one missing tooth, a single tooth implant can be used. However, a doctor can insert a multiple tooth implant for more than one missing tooth, or a full mouth implant if all teeth are missing.

There are two types of implants, endosteal and subperiosteal. An endosteal implant is inserted into the jawline and holds one or more artificial teeth. It is the most common type of dental implant. A subperiosteal implant is a metal post that’s inserted on or above the jawline to hold the tooth in place. These are used for patients who can’t wear dentures or do not have enough bone for the endosteal implant to be used.

Did You Know These Facts About Dental Implants?

  • Osseointegration: Dental implants fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This integration provides a stable foundation and helps prevent bone loss, unlike other tooth replacement options.
  • Immune Response Benefits: Titanium implants can positively influence the immune system by reducing inflammation and promoting healing. This makes them suitable for individuals with autoimmune conditions or those prone to infections.
  • Customized to Natural Teeth: Dental implants are customizable in size, shape, and color, ensuring they match your natural teeth. This customization ensures seamless blending and proper bite force distribution, mimicking natural teeth functions.
