There are many ways to improve a smile that leave something to be desired. When teeth are not in good condition, getting them repaired makes a big difference. Replacing missing teeth can make a drastic difference in a smile. Reshaping teeth or using dental veneers can also make a big difference in the way your smile looks. If you have a “gummy” smile, gum contouring can improve your smile by showing more of your teeth.

Minimizing Gum Tissue

Oversized gums can affect your smile by making your teeth look stubby. Gum contouring removes excess gum tissue and balances your smile by showing more of the teeth. Aesthetically, this is a cosmetic procedure and considered an elective. However, gum contouring may also be considered a requirement for certain periodontal procedures.

This procedure is used in exposing more of the tooth structure which results in the teeth looking longer. It is also used to reduce pockets in the gums. As a means to trim overgrown gum tissue, gum contouring is not considered an elective cosmetic procedure.

Causes for Uneven Gum Tissue

There are several reasons why an individual may develop uneven gums. Thick gums can be hereditary and run in families. There are also health conditions that can cause excessive growth in the gums. Certain medications can do this to the gums also.
Some individuals experience uneven gums due to gum recession. This is usually the case when periodontal disease is involved. Gum recession exposes the roots of the teeth, making them look abnormally long. This is the opposite of overgrown gum tissue, in that the gums are not overgrown; rather they do not cover enough of the tooth.

Gum recession can make teeth more vulnerable to decay. Since this condition is often a sign of gum disease, it is important that it be diagnosed and addressed before more serious problems develop, such as tooth loss. Advanced periodontitis causes deterioration of bone as well as gum tissue.

Benefits of Gum Contouring

Evening out the gum tissue in a “gummy” smile creates a balance between the teeth and the gums that can enhance your smile. Short, stubby teeth look longer and produce a better-looking smile. When gum tissue is uneven, gum contouring can create a more balanced look. A straighter gumline and uniform sized teeth result in a more aesthetically pleasing smile.
