Sandy Springs Veneers

Dental veneers are relatively new to mainstream cosmetic dentistry, but for years we’ve seen the rich and famous transform their smiles using this procedure. What are veneers? Also known as porcelain veneers or porcelain laminates, a veneer is a thin covering that is placed over the tooth giving it a straight, bright and beautiful appearance.

Veneers can also be created from a resin composite, but most cosmetic dentists prefer porcelain because it is less porous, thus more stain resistant, and it gives a more natural tooth-colored appearance. However, resin composite veneers require less of the tooth’s enamel be stripped away before application – though they are still permanent.

What types of dental conditions to veneers correct? There are many, ranging from discoloration of the teeth to broken, chipped or damaged teeth. Some other conditions porcelain veneers improve include:

  • Gaps between the teeth.
  • Slightly misaligned teeth – if the crookedness is severe, braces might be required in conjunction with veneers.
  • Teeth that are worn down.
  • If you’ve had several fillings, loss substantial amounts of enamel or experienced discoloration because of age, fluoride use or other reasons, veneers can be an ideal solution to restore your smile.

As with most cosmetic dental procedures, veneers carry their own advantages and disadvantages; although, disadvantages are few and most patients consider them inconsequential when compared to the benefits veneers offer.

Here are just a few of the advantages of porcelain veneers:

  • They are strong and quite resistant to staining.
  • In most patients, gums are very tolerant and do not become inflamed or agitated when porcelain veneers are set.
  • Little of the tooth’s enamel has to be removed to accommodate the very thin veneer. With crowns, for example, it’s common that much of the tooth will have to be removed or re-shaped before the corrective cosmetic dental procedure can be performed.
  • Also, porcelain veneers give you color and shade options so you can ensure they look natural.

Likely the biggest disadvantage to veneers is the fact that the procedure is permanent. Because the natural tooth has to be adjusted and some of the enamel removed, they are not in any condition to function without the protective porcelain veneer covering.

A few other disadvantages include:

  • Expense – porcelain veneers are costly for most patients, although financing is often available.
  • Removal of enamel prior to getting veneers can make the underlying tooth sensitive.
  • They are difficult to restore should they chip, crack or break.
  • They are only suitable for people with healthy teeth overall – poor candidates include those with gum disease or pre-existing decay.
  • They can fall off; however, this is very rare.

If you’re unsatisfied with your smile and desire a permanent solution, porcelain veneers provide an excellent option.
